Parents and grandparents sponsorship (PGP) is a Canadian immigration program that allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents or grandparents for permanent residence in Canada.
This program is designed to help families reunite by allowing parents and grandparents to live permanently in Canada with access to healthcare, social benefits, and long-term stability.
Unlike other sponsorship programs, the Parents and Grandparents Program has strict eligibility requirements and limited intake periods, often using an invitation-based system. Sponsors must first submit an interest to sponsor and may be invited to apply.
To qualify, the sponsor must meet specific financial requirements known as the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) and must commit to financially supporting their parents or grandparents for a defined period.
The application process involves submitting detailed financial records, proof of relationship, identity documents, and other supporting evidence. Immigration authorities carefully assess whether the sponsor meets income requirements and whether the application is complete and accurate.
Once approved, the sponsored parents or grandparents receive permanent resident status, allowing them to live in Canada long-term and eventually apply for citizenship if eligible.
Because of limited intake, strict eligibility, and detailed documentation requirements, careful planning and preparation are essential for a successful application.
